President spring unscheduled speech surprise
The audience at the People’s Group auditorium was pleasantly surprised as President Pratibha Patil took microphone and lauded the group’s initiatives in medical and educational fields in “just a short span of five years”. She was not scheduled to make speech at the function.
Her schedule only included inauguration of the Centre for Scientific Research and Development and Planting a sapling on the People’s Group premises. Having performed the scheduled functions, the President entered the packed auditorium accompanied by Governor Balram Jakhar, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Health Minister Dr. Gaurishankar Shejwar.
After a brief welcome the function was about to conclude when the President rose and took the microphone.
“I am overwhelmed by the work of the People’s Group and its Chairman Vijaywargia,” the President remarked. The audience applauded the impromptu compliment.
She said though she was not scheduled to speak, she could not resist complimenting Vijaywargia.
“I am told that within five years this group has scaled great heights. More than 10 lakh patients have been treated free. We indeed need more such institutions.”
She expressed the confidence that the Centre for Scientific Research and Development would play a key role in cutting-edge research in the country.
“I will come again after a year to see progress of the centre,” she promised.
Earlier, she inaugurated the Centre for Scientific Research and Development and planted a sapling. Scientists of the centre explained to her its objectives. She also planted a sapling.
The President also inspected an exhibition set up on the occasion. The scientific centre is equipped with all the facilities of research and study in the fields of life science and biomedical science. Specific research work will be undertaken at the centre on checking and curbing genetic disorders and consultation regarding them, stem cell technology, immunology, biochemical etc.
About 25 researchers can simultaneously work at the research centre. Research work on Bhopal gas tragedy can also be undertaken. At the dais, People’s Group Chairman Suresh Vijaywargia and group Director Ruchi Vijaywargia welcomed the President, the Governor and the Chief Minister with bouquets. They also presented mementoes to the VVIPs.
President Patil’s husband Devsing Shekhawat, who was also present on the dais, was welcomed. Uma Iyer conducted the programme. Those present at the function included ministers Raghavji, Babulal Gaur, Narottam Mishra, PCC president Suresh Pachauri, Mayor Sunil Sood, Congress leader Rameshwar Neekhara and MP Kailash Joshi.
